Growing Up Along the Coastlines

Meet Dr. Alison Sky and Dr. Fiona Ocean—twin sisters with blue hearts dedicated to protecting our precious oceans. Growing up along the fossil-rich shores of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, England, and exploring the wild waves of the Irish coastline, these sisters developed a lifelong curiosity about the sea. From their childhood days knee-deep in seaweed and tide pools imagining underwater kingdoms, they turned their passions into a mission to safeguard marine life and ecosystems.

Academic and Global Impact

Their journey didn’t stop at dreams. Both earned top Master’s degrees and PhDs, specializing in marine science, policy, and conservation. Over the years, they’ve helped shape global ocean policies aimed at protecting both nature and the communities that depend on it. Their expertise spans from submerging in scuba diving adventures and kayaking expeditions to sailing through mangroves—cracking ocean jokes along the way, of course.

Worldwide Adventures and Expeditions

The sisters’ love for the ocean has taken them to more than 20 countries worldwide, each adventure adding to their impressive portfolio of fieldwork, community engagement, and policy advocacy. Their explorations have ranged from fossil hunting in Dorset and whale watching in Scotland, to surveying coral reefs and mangroves in Florida, rescuing baby sea turtles in Mexico and Costa Rica, and diving into shark and dugong habitats in Madagascar. They’ve also tracked whales in Canada, studied sea turtle migrations in Malaysia and Singapore, and worked on freshwater fish conservation in Zambia and Malawi. Their travels continue to inspire global efforts for ocean preservation, including upcoming expeditions to the Arctic and Southeast Asia for coral restoration and climate science research.

Protecting Marine Life

Throughout their adventures, Alison and Fiona have contributed to protecting some of the ocean’s most vital life forms. They’ve worked tirelessly to defend coral reefs from bleaching, preserve mangroves and seagrass meadows that serve as nurseries for juvenile fish, and rescue sea turtles amid threats from poaching and plastic waste. Their efforts extend to safeguarding sharks from illegal trade, protecting whales and dolphins, and even conserving lesser-known species like sea cucumbers which are crucial to ocean health.

A Love for Marine Animals

The sisters’ passion for marine life isn’t just scientific—it’s also playful. Their favorite ocean animals include playful dolphins and whales that sing underwater melodies, surfing sea turtles guided by moonlight, and the colorful parrotfish that chomp away at coral, helping keep reefs healthy by producing sand. Conch shells, which amplify the ocean’s own sounds, remind us of the beauty and mystery of marine environments. These incredible creatures aren’t just charming—they’re essential to sustaining the complex web of life beneath the waves.

The Importance of Ocean Habitats

From vibrant coral cities supporting a quarter of ocean species, to resilient mangroves that protect coastlines and recycle nutrients, Alison and Fiona’s work highlights the importance of these habitats. They’ve tracked whale sharks with their distinctive spots, studied hammerhead sharks with their wide, scanning heads, and observed sea snakes that breathe through their skin, all demonstrating the incredible diversity and adaptation in marine ecosystems.

Wondrous and Unique Marine Creatures

In addition to the fascinating, there’s the quirky and wondrous. They’ve marveled at mermaid coins—sand dollars—that look like edible flower cookies, and ancient ammonite fossils that reveal Earth’s prehistoric oceans. Sea cucumbers, with their squishy bodies that clean the ocean floor, and striking lionfish—beautiful yet invasive—show how complex and sometimes surprising the ocean’s inhabitants can be.

Join the Ocean Hero Club!

To spread their passion and empower others, Alison and Fiona founded the Ocean Hero Club. This initiative offers young ocean lovers engaging activity kits, games, and stories designed to inspire the next generation of marine protectors. With ocean-safe swimwear and resourceful adventures, the club encourages everyone to become active participants in safeguarding our seas.

Your Next Ocean Adventure Awaits

The ocean calls—what will your next adventure be? With the sisters’ inspiring work and your own curiosity, you too can become a hero for our blue planet. Because every splash, swim, and effort counts in keeping the ocean vibrant for generations to come.
